suSCon~R maxi PROTECTED YOUNG PLANT CANE FROM LARGE CHILDERS CANEGRUBS PRESENT AT PLANTING

This report indicates protection of sugarcane from large 9-month-old canegrubs already present in the soil with suSCon max/ (50 g/kg imidacloprid) controlled-release insecticide granules applied 'at planting', whereas, data supporting the current registration of suSCon~R max/ to protect sugarcane refer only to damage from canegrubs that develop after the granules are applied.Observations: Three infested fields were planted to sugarcane in October 2007 and treated with 12-15 kg/ha suSCon max/ granules applied 'at-planting' at sett-level.Large 9-month-old canegrubs were already present when the sugarcane crops were planted, but were not noticed until 6-8 weeks after planting, being exposed as furrows were filled-in. As an insecticide had been applied, the grower alerted us to the possibility of control failure.We repeated observations at 10-20 points in each of the fields, recording canegrub populations and crop condition on each of 17 December 2007, 30 January 2008, and 12 March 2008.
