By the year 2020, over 70% of the dams in the United States will be over 50 years old (ASCE, 2013). After 50 years of operation, many mechanical and electrical components are at the end of their designed useful life and may begin to experience failures if not rehabilitated or replaced properly. As these components of our infrastructure continue to age, dam owners and the hydropower industry as a whole are increasingly concerned about the reliability of critical systems such as spillway gates and their associated hoist machinery. This increased attention raises important questions: how is your project affected by the loss of gate operation due to hoist failure? Would the loss of one gate prevent passing the probable maximum flood?
