Cairns Public Health Unit, Queensland Health was approached by medical professionals to undertake an environmental assessment of a patient's property after tests confirmed that the patient was suffering from arsenic poisoning. Environmental Health Officers visited the patient's property during the dry season and obtained samples of water, vegetables and soil. The patient utilises water from the river for irrigation and domestic use without any treatment. Sampling results indicated that the levels of arsenic detected within the patient's drinking water and soil were below Australian national guidelines.
