In order to interpret the mobility of arsenic (As) in the solid phase (functional and operational speciation), geochemical and physicochemical measurements were performed on sediments of "permanent lagoons" of the high Andes salt flats and Loa river estuary in northern Chile. The ecosystems where ; the metalloid concentrations in water (1.8 to 80 mg L~(-1)) and sediment (40 to 870 mg/kg) are high, present toxicity. The high mobility of As is controlled by the acidity, calcium carbonate content (10-58%) and redox. conditions of shallow saline water column in the estuary or salt-brine water in the permanent lagoon.
