The nuclear potential and resulting shell structure are well established for the valley of stability. Often surprising modifications to the familiar ordering of single-particle orbitals in exotic nuclei with a large imbalance of proton and neutron numbers have been found: new magic numbers emerge and conventional shell gaps break down. Current efforts in nuclear structure physics are aimed at uncovering the driving forces behind this shell evolution. This contribution will outline some of the recent efforts at NSCL aimed at elucidating changes in the nuclear structure in the exotic regime from studies of quadrupole collectivity.
