Biologists estimated that Earth's land could produce 100~125 billion tons of biomass, while the ocean produces 50 billion tons of biomass each year. Biomass energy occupies an important position in the whole energy system. Sewage and industrial organic wastewater are one form of biomass, which were sent to a sewage treatment plant that consumed large amounts of energy due to the enormous equipments and technical requirements etc. Anaerobic treatment technologies provide a potential for cut down treatment and operating costs. Microbial fuel cells, which are new technologies to process wastewater while producing electricity simultaneously, can solve these problems. Moreover, MFCs are suitable for using various forms of biodegradable organic wastewater, even sludge, etc.
