The purpose of this study is to develop a low cost detection system that can monitor air contaminants of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H) for passive smoker. Air contaminant monitoring can benefit many people as pollution from haze and poisonous gases from vehicles and cigarette smoke becoming the threat to human health. Poisonous gases from vehicles and cigarette smoke can be easily detected by carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and toxic gas. The emission of carbon monoxide even at a very low concentration can significantly affect the health. This paper describes a study, design and development of a detection system of air contaminants monitoring of carbon monoxide and hydrogen concentration with the standalone microcontroller based system for data acquisition and control. Air contaminant sensor (TGS2600) is used as the module for detection of air contaminants based on CO and H concentration. Microcontroller PIC 16F877A is the controller module to control the overall operation of the built system. The results show that the accuracy of the prototype to measure H and CO is more than 95% accurate compared to calculated results. The prototype characteristic sensor curves for H and CO are about 95% accurate to the curves by sensor manufacturer. This study can be used for accurate reading of H and CO and other gases for air contaminant and for application related to air quality.
