Five years ago, Porsche AG had already laid the groundwork for hybridisation as a basic component of its CO_2 strategy. The new, second-generation Porsche dual clutch gearbox (PDK) is a central component for achieving the envisioned goals. In developing this new generation gearbox, Porsche placed top priority on attaining maximum performance and efficiency while maximizing comfort. Goals in the specification for the new gearbox concept - in addition to boosting torque capacity, using an ideal number of gears and implementing flexible gear ratios and gear spread - were excellent shifting performance and optimal efficiency while realising maximum economy. The new PDK has made it possible to successfully integrate a drivetrain in combination with a high-performance hybrid module into the vehicle without making the gearbox longer. The new Porsche dual clutch gearbox harmonises all of the previously named requirements and thereby offers ideal conditions for broad-based implementation in future Porsche vehicles.
