(8)Tailings Deposits Considerations Regarding Existing Regulations in Chile

This article presents an analysis of some technical applications included in existing norms(regulations or guidelines) which are applicable in Chile to tailings deposits, mainly regulationsestablished by the DGA (General Directorate for Water) of the Ministry of Public Works andSERNAGEOMIN (National Mining and Geological Service) which reports to the Ministry ofMining. Considerations include return periods for the design of runoff diversion channels,gradients for deposition of thickened tailings, discharge of water in emergency situations,application of a safe distance from a failure hazard and stability studies for Phases III and IVmentioned in D.S. (Supreme Decree) 248. The difficulties of applying each aspect, their impact onthe project and operational utility are discussed and analyzed.
