Hydrolysis reactor adopting the up-flow granular sludge bed configuration as a pretreatment process was investigated for its feasibility and process performance. The combined process of the hydrolysis reactor and A/O was adopted for treating the domestic sewage operated at a total HRT of 23 h. The results showed that the average COD, TN, SS, and TP concentrations measured in the final effluent of the hydrolysis-A/O process amounted to 40.26 mg/L, 13.68 mg/L, 12.00 mg/L and 0.63 mg/L. This corresponded to the average removal rates of COD, TN, SS, and TP that could reach 90.40%, 66.36%, 95.38% and 89.15%, respectively. This showed that the combined system represented an effective sewage treatment process.
