So far, researchers have found many methods to simulate the mechanical behavior of discrete material when exposed to external force. These methods can be divided into two categories: Method of continuous mechanism and discrete element method (DEM). This approach focuses on the mechanical behavior of the objects, which ignores the individual nature of the objects in the unit. Besides, this approach relies on highly simplified, constitutive equations with certain characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to simulate the complex dynamic behaviors of discrete material without setting the complex boundary conditions. Compared with continuous mechanism methods, DEM, with different research methods, has established the discrete numerical model according to discrete characteristics of the material itself, and has shown great superiority in the analysis of the discrete nature of the material.
