Geographic Distribution and Sequence Stratigraphic Position of the Lower Wilcox Reynolds Coal in Central Northern Louisiana

Previous investigations of the coals in the lower Wilcox Group of northern Louisiana have shown that the thickest coals are concentrated in central northern Louisiana. We combine four detailed, contiguous maps of the Reynolds coal to demonstrate that the Reynolds coal is concentrated along the trace of the Angelina-Caldwell Flexure. We propose that syndepositional activity of this flexure resulted in rapid subsidence and in the organic sediments which became the Reynolds coal accumulating in paralic lagoons in an aggradational, shelf margin wedge above a type 2 sequence boundary.
