Diversity among households in the U.S. is rising with increasing rates of divorced and cohabitating couples, single persons, childfree couples, interracial families, same-sex parents, and transracial adoptive families (Gates et al. 2007; Kreider 2003; Kreider and Elliott 2009). The latter three family types often face social discrimination because they do not fit the "norm" (Docan-Morgan 2008; March 1995; Ross 1988; Vaquera and Kao 2005), which is described by Goffman (1963) as social stigma. The structure of families in the United States is clearly changing and evolving. The forms of family vary widely and the definition of family may no longer be based on structural relationships but instead through a sense of a support system.
