Effect of a 12T high magnetic field on the intermediate phase growth in Mg-Al diffusion couple under different annealing time at 400 °C was studied. It is found that, after annealing with or without the high magnetic field, the thickness of the diffusion layer phase is increased with the increase of the annealing time. The thickness of the diffusion layer is increased with the application of high magnetic field of positive gradient, and it is bigger than that in a weaker positive gradient magnetic field. However the thickness of diffusion layer is decreased with application of high magnetic field of negative gradient. It indicates that high magnetic field of positive gradient promote the growth rate of the intermediate phase growth in Mg-Al diffusion couple while high magnetic field of negative gradient can restrain the growth rate.
