Premixed Turbulent Combustion in High Reynolds Number Regimes - of Thickened Flamelets and Distributed Reactions

A new Hi-Pilot burner has been developed and tested; it represents a device that stabilizes a high-Reynolds number premixed flame that can be subjected to intense turbulence. A hydrogen pilot flame prevents blowout and a diverging nozzle prevents flashback. Very large turbulence levels are produced using impinging jets as well as a slotted turbulence generator that was designed by Prof. Lieuwen. Results that are described include: elevated Reynolds numbers and turbulence levels achieved to date, integral scale measurements, flame shape and flame lengths. The kilohertz PIV and PLIF diagnostics that were designed are described along with the ongoing measurements.
