Fuzzy Methods for Assessing Students' Analogical Reasoning Skills

Much of our cognitive activity depends on our ability to reason analogically. In a recent paper we have developed a fuzzy model for the process of this type of reasoning. In the present work the coordinates of the centre of gravity of the graph of the membership function involved in this model are used as a defuzzification method in converting our fuzzy outputs to a crisp number. In this way we actually obtain a method for assessing the analogical reasoning skills of student groups'. Techniques of assessing the students' performance on an individual basis are also discussed and examples are presented illustrating the use of our results in practice.
