THERMAG V CONFERENCE FOREWORD AND WELCOME ADDRESS: FRENCH CONTRIBUTIONS TO ELECTROMAGNETISM

THERMAG conferences - usually held every two years, dealing with magnetic heating, refrigeration and energy conversion - have now become a tradition. In 2003, the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) founded its Working Party on Magnetic Refrigeration, which attracted material scientists, mechanical and thermodynamic engineers, refrigeration and fluid dynamic specialists, etc. to conduct research in the "new" and alternative magnetic refrigeration domain. A series of international conferences, THERMAG I (Egolf et al., 2005), II (Poredos and Sarlah, 2007), III (Gschnei?ner and Pecharski, 2009) and ΓV (Zhao and Huang, 2010) were held on three different continents and led to closer relations between the two scientific groups dealing with materials and machines. And now, from September 17-20, 2012, we have the pleasure of welcoming you and meeting (again) to exchange knowledge and' the latest results on magnetocaloric materials, magnets, magnetic refrigeration prototypes and the related experiments, theories and numerical simulations at THERMAG V, organized by Lebouc and Fruchart (2012) and their organizing team in Grenoble, France.
