The aerodynamic compressors, as components of aviation gas turbines, are usually manufactured from metal alloys. The project on which the present paper is based aims to develop a light weight carbon fibre compressor impeller leading to the gas turbine weight reduction. Besides the conception and manufacturing issues raised by the execution of a centrifugal impeller, from a carbon fibre reinforced polymer, using the autoclave technology, the balancing problem must be solved for a particular assembly, including a hybrid composite-metal impeller and a metallic shaft. A case study regarding the balancing process parameters is presented for this case, in relation to the classic balancing method, in terms of geometrical restrictions applicable to the metallic area of the impeller. There are taken into account the technological limitations not allowing the removal of material from the composite part of the impeller. The conclusion section is related to the challenges arisen in the development of the desired impeller, along with the global advantages resulted for including it in a gas turbine and the aspects necessary to be redesigned.
