The paper presents primary analysis and control design of a shell and tube heat exchanger with counterflow cooling. The computation models are derived for the analysis and control simulation purposes. The control design procedure is based on an approximation of a nonlinear model of the process by a continuous-time external linear model with parameters recursively estimated through an external delta model. The simple control system structure with one feedback controller is used. The resulting controller is derived using the polynomial approach and the explicit pole assignment method. Control simulations are performed on the nonlinear model of the tubular heat exchanger.
