Solutions for Increasing the Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations

The paper proposes a multi-criteria analysis of some shallow foundation solutions for different conditions of the foundation ground. The location of the constructions on foundation grounds with reduced bearing capacity, respectively on foundation grounds with large settlements, incompatible with a good behaviour of the constructions, imposes to adopt some complex foundation solutions. These solutions can be deep foundation solutions or solutions using the improvement of the physical and mechanical characteristics of the foundation ground. The paper presents a comparative analysis of three foundation solutions - foundation on natural ground, foundation on a compacted granular material cushion and foundation on a compacted granular material cushion reinforced with geogrids. The analysis was performed using two calculus methods, the analytic calculus recommended by DIN 4017 and DIN 14475 and the Finite Elements Method (F.E.M.) analysis of the foundation solutions proposed to be analyzed.
