External incompatibilities in the democracy support: addressing the impacts of governance on democracy

Despite the awareness of extrinsic conflicts of objectives in the democracy support, there is a large deficit of research done on this issues. But authors of the article believe that before addressing such conflicting objectives, casual relations between different concepts supported by the donors aiming at democratization must be determined. Therefore the article approaches the problematic by exploring the impacts of different dimensions of (good) governance that practically overlap with possibly clashing concepts, on democracy. The results of the quantitative research reveal that there are no significant casual relations between peace, security and stateness on one hand and democracy on the other. However there is a significant impact of the rule of law, as well as sustainable development on democracy. Consequently the paper concludes that donors should definitely rethink the possibilities of prioritizing the rule of law and sustainable development when it comes to their democratization efforts.
