In the last few years the number of female health professionals has increased. Therefore there is a need to understand the causes and the distinguishing characteristics of this phenomenon. This increase is particularly evident in psychiatry with a progressive growth in the number of females involved in different roles in the field. We will discuss women's motivations to assume this demanding role, the consequences on patient-doctor relationship and on the organization of the work. We will analyze some female gender resources that are in line with the changes of the health system that is becoming more patient centred. In the end we have underscored the most important differences in patient management between male and female psychiatrists. These differences should be emphasized and became a resource.
