Benzyocyclobutene(BCB)is important in polymer science for crosslinking reactions because the reaction is thermally activated and no small molecule byproduct is released Although the high thermal stability of BCB up to-200 °C is advantageous for synthesizing and processing engineering polymers at elevated temperatures,more energy efficient crosslinking at lower temperature would be advantageous for rubber compounding.The ring-opening isomerization temperature of BCBs can be lowered by introducing substituents at the benzylic position of the cyclobutene ring.This talk will present the development of 1-functionalized benzocylobutenes that crosslink by ring-opening isomerization at lower temperatures,and that are polymerizable through styrene and methacrylate groups.
