The Rothamsted Insect Survey: Old traps, new tricks

The Rothamsted Insect Survey operates two trap networks in the UK: a light-trap network for monitoring moths and a suction-trap network primarily for monitoring aphids but with the capacity to monitor other aerial invertebrate taxa. Daily data are available from almost half a century. The data have been put to a wide variety of uses spanning the applied to fundamental spectrum. The current emphasis is on making the data available to all. To this end, a new database will soon be operational via a password-protected website. This paper describes the nature of the data and its range of applications in applied biology and invites enquiries from potential users.
