Structure and Compression Properties of Polyurethane-Imide Foams

A new generation of rigid polyurethane-imide foams were synthesized via the reaction of isocyanate terminated polyimide prepolymers extended by 3, 3-4, 4-benzo-phenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride with polyether polyol, and deionized water and pantane were used for blowing agent. The obtained polymers were analyzed with compression test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM analysis revealed the cellular structure with different density. The polyurethane-imide foams with high density had small cell diameter, thick film thickness and spherical shape. The opposite cellular structure appeared in low density polyurethane-imide foams with larger cell diameter, such as thin film thickness and polygonal cells. Compression tests exhibited the mechanical properties of PUIF increased with the density of polyurethane-imide foams increasing.
