The progressive development of oil and gas reserves exploration in deep water regions and the boom in offshore wind energy has opened up good opportunities, but also led to a shortage of suitably qualified personnel. Each loading operation with heavy or bulky loads and their transportation or loading and unloading of components for offshore wind turbines are big challenge for people and technology and with some degree of risk involved. But the training in practice is cost intensive and time consuming. The possibilities for training are limited by the short harbor times and the applicable safety regulations. Special the training for emergency situations can not be shown always sufficient in practice. Shortly speaking, there is a lack of qualified personal and a lack of close to reality training facilities for heavy lifting personnel With the help of the Heavy Lift and Offshore Crane Simulator HLS_7 it is possible to train the team, who is involved in the loading/unloading process and in the installation of a windmill. The training includes team building, communication, decision making, and reaction to emergency situations. The scenarios can be configured from beginner training for crane operators up to complex loading scenarios with tandem operation of cranes. The simulator includes workplaces for cargo loading officers, crane drivers, bridge workplace, ballast station, exercise planning, briefing and de-briefing.
