A goal of colour science since the establishment of the trichromatic theory of colour perception (e.g., Maxwell, 1855; von Helmholtz, 1852; Young, 1802) has been the accurate determination of the mean (or standard) spectral sensitivities of the long-, middle- and shortwavelength-sensitive (L, M and S) cones-also known as the fundamental colour matching functions (or CMFs): l(λ), m(λ) and s(λ). These CMFs are the physiological bases of all other CMFs. The cone fundamentals of Stockman and Sharpe (2000a), which are the new CIE international standard for colorimetry (CIE, 2007), rely on measurements made in both normal trichromats and colour deficient observers. The measurements were used to guide the linear combinations of the Stiles & Burch (1959) CMFs that define the cone fundamentals. These fundamental CMFs can be linearly transformed to the more familiar colorimetric variants: x(λ), y(λ) and z(λ) by making a few simple assumptions.
