'Synchronous Condensers Application'

Ansaldo Energia has recently completed the erection at site of two synchronous condensers connected to the Italian grid. This application is located at the interconnection with the HVDC system and the total rated reactive power is 500 MVAr. The two synchronous condensers are based on well proven standardized 2-pole air cooled turbogenerator design, normally used for combined cycle power plants. Due to the absence of prime mover, the machine needs a special static starter.
