Silos are widely used in a number of industries to store bulk materials ranging from agricultural grains, coal, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, woodchips, food products and construction materials. These bulk materials generally consist of mixtures of various components that have different material properties, such as density, size, shape and morphology. It is a challenging task in processing and handling these bulk materials because the difference in materials properties is very likely to cause segregation, a common problem in processing and handling of bulk materials, that can create serious problems in product quality control.
