Grupo Mexico's La Caridad concentrator plant has learned that they need to respect the machinery to maximize process performance. In their case, the lines of Outotec (Outokumpu) OK-38 flotation cells showed slow Molybdenum flotation rates all the way until the last units, which had flotation rates far higher. These last units were installed more recently and were of another type. The remarkable difference in the kinetics was thought to be a result of the different type of cells. A routine maintenance stop revealed that the OK cell rotors and stators were in poor shape. To correct the problem, one line was fitted with Outotec's OK MultiMix mechanisms (the same type the cells had originally), and another line was fitted with new FloatForce mechanisms. Subsequent surveys showed a remarkable increase in recovery compared to the previous status. A comparison of the "as found" scenario with that of the badly worn mechanisms showed a jump in Moly recovery in the OK cells from 49% to 70%, as well as an increase in Copper recovery. The conclusion was to replace all mechanisms with the FloatForce type as soon as possible. This case confirms that respect for equipment leads to better recovery.
