1. CONCLUSIONS: 2. Instrumentation now exists that allows felts to be scanned continuously without human interaction, thereby eliminating a significant mill safety hazard. 3. Water mass measuring instruments, both fixed and scanning, have been shown as powerful tools to optimize vacuum systems and save substantial electrical costs. 4. Water mass measurements, in conjunction with statistical analysis of machine operating data, has been shown to reduce energy costs by over 2% in the case study presented. 5. Powerful tools to eliminate process variables, such as shift to shift, are supplied with the instruments described in this paper.
