1. A test method to determine the efficacy of the antibacterial nonwoven face piece respirators, surgical masks or air filters was successfully developed. 2. It provided quantitative evaluation of the efficacy of antimicrobial nonwoven filter media by colony count method compared to methods that only provide particle filtering efficacy of the materials. 3. The method exhibits potential to evaluate the biocidal performance of the many types of nonwoven fabrics used in protective filtering face piece respirators and air filters to combat aerosolized pathogens. 4. Our procedure evaluated filter performance using an aerosol challenge of bacteria, which are easily assayed; however, the same general approach could be used to test the virucidal efficacy off the filters if an appropriate assay method for viruses is used.
