We propose a novel design concept to continuously vary the widths of the signal trace and grounds of a conventional coplanar waveguide (CPW) to achieve a predefined matching characteristic of a transmission line transformer. Theoretical analysis is established, optimized and evaluated for a compact transformer. Then, a miniaturized 1 GHz CPW Wilkinson power divider (WPD) is designed and simulated to validate the design procedure. Simulations show input port matching below -30 dB, output ports matching/isolation below -15 dB, and transmission losses of -3.1 dB at the design frequency.
