This presentation will discuss the status of method development and validation of the current ASTM D22.05 on Indoor Air standards and work items to measure emissions from spray polyurethane foam insulation (SPF).In 2017,ASTM D8142 Standard Test Method for Determining Chemical Emissions from Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Insulation using Micro-Scale Environmental Test Chambers was published.The micro-scale chamber method can be used by manufacturers and government agencies to identify and quantify emissions from cured SPF insulation products for product development,manufacturing quality control and for comparison of field samples.Work continues on the development of a method for evaluating SPF emissions in a large-scale environment.A Standard Test Method for Measuring Chemical Emissions from Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Insulation Samples in a Large-Scale Spray Room is being developed (ASTM Work Item WK58354) by the ASTM D22.05 subcommittee.This method will describe the procedures for measuring the chemical emissions of semi-volatile and volatile organic compounds (SVOCs and VOCs) from SPF insulation samples in a large-scale ventilated spray room.In conjunction with computer simulation modelling,this method is being developed for the purpose of estimating appropriate post spray times for unprotected workers and building occupants to safely re-enter the workspace.A new standard Practice on Conducting Emission and Fate Modeling for Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Insulation in an Indoor Environment is also being developed (ASTM Work Item WK58356).This standard will describe the use of indoor mathematical models such as US EPA's IECCU which can be used to assess the chemical emissions from SPF and their chemical fate (e.g.,sorption and ventilation) in a multi-compartment residential building.The status of these work items will be reported.
