Phosphorus-containing monomers and polymers have been used in biomedical applications as adhesion promoters to dental tissue, bone and metals. For example, monomers with mono- or dihydrogenphosphate and phosphonic acid functional groups have been used in dental composites and self-etching dental adhesives. More recently bisphosphonate-containing monomers were investigated for self-etching dental adhesive applications. Polymers containing bisphosphonic acid groups serve as therapeutic agents for bone targeted drug delivery applications and scaffolds for mineralization of hydroxyapatite (HAP) for tissue engineering applications.
