Understanding the normal anatomy of the growth plate is essential when deciding on diagnostics, treatment options, and prognosis for physeal injuries. Histologic characteristics of the normal canine growth plate have been previously described. Major components of the physis include a fibrous portion, a cartilaginous portion, and a bony portion. The fibrous component surrounds the growth plate and is composed of the ossification groove (of groove of Ranvier) and the perichondral ring (or ring of LaCroix). The groove of Ranvier contributes chondrocytes and the ring of LaCroix provides mechanical support. The cartilaginous component is further broken down into zones of reserve, proliferation, and hypertrophy. This is followed by the zone of calcified cartilage, and, eventually, bone. The reserve zone contained germinal cells and damage to this area can lead to abnormal growth of the limb or cessation of growth at the physis. The hypertrophic zone is the weakest area of the growth plate and thought tobe the most commonly effected zone with fractures.
