SMALL ANIMAL MORBIDITY MORTALITY: ANESTHESIA MISTAKES HOW TO PREVENT THEM

General anesthesia can be defined as 'a drug induced lack of consciousness during which a patient cannot be aroused, even by painful stimulus' (Dillman 2007). General anesthetic drugs cause unconsciousness, amnesia, prevent recognition of pain, and immobilize the patient. These effects allow us to complete diagnostic and therapeutic procedures humanely, safely, and efficiently. Unfortunately, these drugs contribute to morbidity and mortality by impairing ventilation, airway control, and cardiovascular function. Importantly, delivery systems and equipment used for anesthetic administration may also contribute to adverse events.
