In experiments aimed at making naphthenic lube base stocks from distillate aromatics extract, two-step hydrotreating produces significantly better products than one-step hydrotreating. In particular, product viscosity and boiling ranges are considerably lower than expected. Part of the reduction could be due to the extra sulfur removal provided by the second hydrotreating step.
