TITANIUM PRODUCTION, RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS IN CIS: CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE TRENDS

This paper reviews research and development of titanium allovs mill-products,Processes and applications in CIS between 12th and 13th Titanium World Conferences. The CIS titanium industry remains an important contributor to the global titanium market by both volume and applications. Export shipments of titanium, especially mill products, prevail above domestic ones which remain relatively low despite of some progress in scale of using titanium in the CIS end-users such as aerospace, chemical and marine (shipbuilding) industries. Titanium research activity is developing in line with industry needs and is motivated by both performance-driven and cost-driven applications. In many cases studies are being stimulated by Interstate Association "Titan" through broad cooperation within CIS. Due to application-oriented nature of research activities, fundamental studies on the complex nature of titanium-based materials are gradually shifting to applied research to develop and scale up advanced allovs, processes and new applications. Despite of very complicated political and economic situation within CIS representatives of titanium industry and science put significant efforts to maintain strong links between participants of formerly united structure.
