The 6xxx series alloys represent over 80 percent of the North American extrusion market. AA6005A and AA6061 have dominated the medium-strength alloy extrusion market for many years. Ongoing energy efficient developments, particularly in the transportation and building and construction industries, require improved engineering properties for oxxx series medium-strength aluminum extrusion alloys. Quite often end users select a structural alloy because of the property gap between AA6063-T6 and AA6061-T6/AA6005A-T61. For 6xxx series alloys, the mechanical properties are determined by Mg_xSi precipitates. Recent research has demonstrated that the peak-aged condition is better achieved when it has an alloy chemistry with approximately a 1:1 atomic ratio of Mg and Si. This work has lead to bridging the property gap and introducing AA6063 Super Flow?. Low breakthrough pressure, maximum extrudability, and low quench sensitivity are the fundamentals of this alloy. Corrosion resistance, machinability and weldability features are retained without compromising metallurgical characteristics and engineering properties. Significant volumes of this alloy have been shipped to extruders and their continuing satisfaction has served as an impetus for registering the AA6063-T65 temper. Acceptance of the Rio Tinto Alcan High-Performance AA6063 Super Flow alloy has been successful in the market.
