The effect of die design on the mechanical properties of profiles recycled from AA6060 chips by hot extrusion was investigated utilizing two different dies to produce the same aluminum profile of a 20mm x 5mm rectangular section: a conventional die called flat-face die; and a porthole die that is typically used for complex hollow and semi-hollow aluminum profiles. The tensile test results of the extruded profiles were discussed and compared. With the porthole die, a more than 70 percent higher ductility could be achieved. The mechanical properties of the extruded profiles were compared in quenched and artificially aged condition (T6 heat treatment). The mechanical properties of the aluminum profiles extruded from chips were also compared to the aluminum profiles extruded from as-cast billets in both as-extruded and T6 heat treated conditions.
