Stability analysis of complex underground structures - from data acquisition to 3D numerical simulation

The assessment of long-term stability and behaviour of complex underground structures is an interdisciplinary task which includes the areas of geology, hydrogeology, surveying and geotechnical engineering. The basis is an extensive investigation of the geological and rock mechanical conditions on site as well as an appropriate testing program and the compilation of a realistic numerical model. This paper gives an example of how these areas, their methods and the acquisition of data work together to create a three-dimensional computer aided model of underground structures. Due to the characteristic of complex underground structures geometric shapes can occur, for which a simplified two-dimensional analysis is not significant. A more detailed 3D simulation should help to identify existing zones of weakness. By implementing data into the numerical simulation it should be possible to provide a time-dependent occurrence of weak spots in the rock mass to be able to initiate stabilization measures in an early stage.
