Experimental investigation of a large-scale 3-story steel building structure is presented. The seismic lateral force resisting system of the building includes a moment resisting frame (MRF) and a frame with bracing and nonlinear viscous dampers (DBF). The building is assumed to be located on a stiff soil site in Southern California, an area of high seismicity in the United States. The experimental investigation uses the real-time hybrid earthquake simulation (RTHS) experimental method. In the RTHS, the complete structure system is divided into an experimental substructure and an analytical substructure. The experimental substructure is the DBF with nonlinear viscous dampers, and the analytical substructure is comprised of the remaining parts of building, including a steel MRF, gravity load frames, the associated seismic mass, and the inherent damping of the building. RTHS at the frequently occurring earthquake (FOE), design basis earthquake (DBE), and maximum considered earthquake (MCE) hazard level were conducted. The results from the RTHS are presented and the observed behaviour of the experimental substructure and the complete structural system are discussed.
