Hybrid simulation has emerged as a potentially-accurate and efficient tool for the evaluation of the response of large and complex structures under earthquake loading. As an application example, hybrid simulation is applied to semi-rigidly connected frames with different connection strength limits. In the sample study three hybrid simulations were conducted and included the most reliable, realistic, and computationally efficient experimental and analytical modules, which were developed and successfully integrated for a full system-level assessment. The simulations included a full-scale physical specimen for the experimental module and a 2D finite element model for the analytical module. It is demonstrated that hybrid simulation is a powerful tool for advanced assessment when used with appropriate analytical and experimental realisations of the components and that semi-rigid frames are a valuable, often preferable, option in earthquake engineering applications.
