PHYTOREMEDIATION OF POLLUTED SOIL BY SOME WOODY TREE SPECIES

Heavy metal contamination of soil and groundwater is hazardous to human and animal life. This study aims to management of natural resources by controlling the environmental pollution and plants to improve contaminated soil. Phytoremediation of heavy metal can be carried out by using some woody species: Moms alba, Khaya senegalensis, Acacia saligna and Populus nigra. We examined the heavy metal (Cd, Co, Ni and Pb) concentration in water, soil and plant parts, as well as soil properties. All the plantswere successfully transported metals from root to shoot. Sequestration preferences were varied between species. It is suggested that the concentration factors (CF=Concentration in plant tissues/Content of metal in soil) could be achieved according to the number of planted trees ha~(-1). Morus alba Ni and Co highest translocation factor values were found at the highest temperature degree. Their concentrations are affected by soil pH, organic matter and water salinity, which may naturally accelerate soilphytoremediation processes at warm climate regions.
