Effect of phosphate fertilizers on arsenic mobility in arsenic-contaminated soil: Possible assistance in phytoremediation

In order to evaluate the effect of phosphate fertilizers on Arsenic (As) mobilization and its accumulation in Salix atrocinerea for use in phytoremediation, a 10 week-pot experiment was carried out. Four fertilizer treatments were applied, at increasing Phosphorus (P) doses. Total and available As and P were determined in soils and As concentration was measured in plants and leachates. Results showed that the application of phosphate enhanced As mobility and its accumulation in plants, being mainly in roots with low doses. With high doses this mobilization could pose a potential risk due to an excessive removal of this contaminant.
