Pteris vittata is a known arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator, and has been successfully utilized to remediate As contaminated soils in China and America. It has been found that the variation in As accumulating ability between ecotypes can be 10 times. The reason for this variation was disclosed to be partly attributed to the different As (V) reducing ability. Two P. vittata ecotypes have different uptake characteristics of As (III) and As (V), which was mainly caused by the differed As (III) percentage in the vascular bundle of P. vittata's roots. The higher the percentage of As (III) was, the more As could be accumulated by P. vittata. The reason for different ecotypes to form varied As (V) reducing ability still requires further investigation.
