Driver's Visual Attention Influenced by Static and Dynamic Roadside Billboards - Driving Simulator Study

A car driver, despite of massive launch of assisting devices, is still required to pay responsibly his attention to primary driving tasks. If his visual attention is continuously loaded with ineffective and unwanted information, it may lead to overloading of his/her visual and mental attention due to excessive workload and consequently to failures in primary driving tasks. Even though we could recently notice actions to reduce presence of road side advertisement, there are still many places where the situation is appalling. This holds especially for urban areas, where the concentration of advertisement is much higher and its regulation has no strict rules. In this research we focused on driver's performance and driving safety influenced by dynamic billboard distraction (moving, changing LCD), which are expected to attract even bigger part of the driver's attention. The paper shows the results of analyses of outputs from the set of simulator experiments.
