Adopting and Adapting to Advanced Treatment Technologies

The Regional Municipality of Peel in Ontario, Canada supplies drinking water to approximately 1.1 million people from two surface water treatment plants which treat water from Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario is a high quality source water characterized as moderately hard and generally low in turbidity (usually <1 NTU), low in organics (TOC < 3 mg/L, UVT > 95%). The water quality does deteriorate under storm and spring run-off conditions and algae in the lake can cause taste and odour episodes in the late summer and autumn.
