The operating characteristics of an electric traction system can be pre-determined by computer simulation of analytic models, which constitutes an important support tool in railroad system design. To perform the simulation of the train movement it is necessary to know geometric data of the railways. The absence of data or difficulty in obtaining them, forces the railway companies to resort to costly and time consuming surveys to collect the data needed for modelling their railways. This paper presents an alternative method of collection a railway geometric data using geo-positioning satellite receivers. Besides being able to allow a rapid and reliable geometric railroad data collection, this method can also be used in the validation of the numerical simulation of the train movement because it also collects information about its running speed.
